General notes on auditions

Thank you for your interest in “Urinetown.” Music Theatre of Wenatchee is thrilled to present this hilarious, award-winning musical. MTW previously presented this show in 2006 when audiences thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you plan to audition for the show there are many important dates to consider. Most importantly, you must be available on all performance dates (Evenings October 15-17, October 22-24, October 29-30 and matinees October 24 and 31) as well as the final week of rehearsals (Tech Rehearsal Saturday October 10, Dress Rehearsals October 12-14). Rehearsals run Monday through Thursday from August 17 through October 14, usually from 6:30 to 9:00pm. Not all actors will be needed at every rehearsal. You will only be called to rehearse scenes, songs, or movement you are involved in. The director will create a rehearsal schedule that makes efficient use of the actors’ time and accommodates rehearsal conflicts.

Auditions will take place on Monday August 10 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm at Riverside Playhouse. You may download the audition form using the link above. You may complete the form beforehand, if you wish, and bring the completed form with you. Otherwise, you will be given time to complete the form when you arrive for your audition. Please be prepared to list all scheduling conflicts you have during the rehearsal period. If you know you are unavailable either of the next two days, please let the people at the audition table know that on August 10.

After completing paperwork we will proceed with some singing. All auditioners will be asked to sing a song from the show in its original key, sheet music provided. Audition music is available below for you to download and prepare. A piano accompanist will be provided. After everyone has had a chance to sing, our choreographer will lead auditioners through some movement activities. Please wear clothing that you can move comfortably in. We are not expecting trained dancers but movement is a large and important part of the show so we will be looking for actors who move well.

All auditioners will be expected to return on Tuesday August 11 at 6:30. Most of this second day will consist of “cold reads” but there may be some singing as well.

Some actors will be invited for specific times on Wednesday evening, for callbacks. Please, only show up on this night if you have been asked to attend.

Characters

Officer Lockstock

The tongue-in-cheek narrator of the story, he is a corrupt policemen who secretly kills off the guilty offenders. Bold, brash, and larger than life in many ways. Actor should have excellent comic timing and great story telling charisma.

Penelope (“Penny”) Pennywise

The tough, jaded warden of the poorest, filthiest urinal in town. She is Cladwell’s one-time lover and mother to Hope who eventually softens her temper. This transformation is an important part of the show.

Bobby Strong

The dashing, rebellious everyman who works for Miss Pennywise at the poorest, filthiest urinal in town. He becomes an unsuspecting protagonist and romantic hero when he starts a revolution and falls in love with Hope Cladwell.

Hope Cladwell

Cladwell’s beautiful daughter, torn between her father and her new love for Bobby. She begins as an innocent, naïve angel but becomes vengeful and determined after being exposed to her father’s evil.

Caldwell B. Cladwell

The evil president and owner of Urine Good Company. He is a miserly money-grubber who gleefully works the political system to exploit the poor.

Little Sally

A precocious and irreverent street urchin. She serves as a quasi-narrator who often questions Lockstock and the play’s logic.

Cladwell’s sycophantic lackey. A servile assistant.

A greedy politician in Cladwell’s pocket. A bumbling coward.

Officer Barrel

Lockstock’s patrol partner. A thuggish and aggressive policeman.

Josephine “Ma” Strong

Bobby’s mother and Joseph’s wife. A strong-willed woman with a bite, able to withstand the hard hand life has dealt her. Will double as “Old Woman” in the opening (part of the ensemble).

Hot Blades Harry

One of the Rebels (ensemble), he is a psychopathic and can become a violent loose cannon. Will double as Joseph “Old Man” Strong.

Little Becky Two-shoes

One of the Poor. She is impulsive and accusatory. Will double as Mrs. Millenium.

Ensemble

6 actors play a wide variety of roles and are extremely busy in the show. We are looking for strong parts singers and versatile actors of all ages and types who move well. Besides playing “The Poor” in Act I and “The Rebels” in Act II, these actors play a variety of other roles including the three mentioned immediately above.

There are a few scenes featuring the original Broadway cast available on YouTube but they are generally of poor video quality. The video of the 2002 Tony Awards including “Run Freedom Run” is a good example of the show’s energy.
